Hospitals of the future will increasingly rely on intelligence from real-time healthcare applications and connected devices to improve workflow, safety, and costs. In their report, Developing the IT Strategy for the Real-Time Health System Primer for 2018, Gartner says, “Healthcare providers with established EHR capability are entering the real-time health system era of advanced situational awareness and intelligence for management and operations. This is at the heart of the real-time healthcare system. Situational awareness involves:

  1. Gathering information
  2. Understanding that information in context
  3. Making short-term projections based on the current state. Healthcare Delivery Organizations are real-time healthcare systems to the extent that they have mastered situational awareness.”
