Radical changes in network management and control

Software Defined Networks are here to stay – this is how I started my first blog on SDN. And in fact it becomes reality, more and more every day as we see customers deploying more of our network management and hardware solutions to become more efficient and more agile. I see that the main benefits of SDN are clearly the OpEx savings. SDN is about making the network more programmable to address business benefits like

  • Improve network efficiency through centralized management and control along with higher degree of orchestration and automation

  • Improve IT agility through fast and reliable application services, supporting the rapid deployment of new applications

  • Provide advanced analytics so that lines of business can easily monitor and control these resources and make better strategic business decisions.

So what SDN is really about? It provides a programmatic interface into the network fabric that allows network administrators or other IT teams and applications to provision new services on the fly, automate tasks and orchestrate different systems – physical and virtual.

Most SDN solutions out there also provide applications an interface for programmability but the network itself is most of the times not application flow aware as this requires a totally different level of scale at the ASIC, switch level (see also my blog: SDN and the forgotten data plane).

But to close the loop, provide SDN services to application flows within the network and so manage applications on the network effectively, one needs to take that next step: the move to application and user centric network management and control, automated and orchestrated through an SDN architecture.
