It’s been a long time coming, but the K-12 Common Core state standards are finally here. Not only are the standards in place, but districts throughout the country will be conducting online student tests during the 2014-2015 school year to assess if their students are on track. These online assessments will require a robust infrastructure to handle up to thousands of student devices simultaneously accessing remote testing servers.
We conducted a survey among K-12 school districts to better understand how they will be conducting the assessments and whether they feel they are adequately prepared. The results, shown in the infographic below, are cause for concern, if not outright alarm. Although planning for the Common Core State Standards is underway at 80% of the districts, most districts still have doubts that their infrastructure can handle the testing. Asked how confident they are that their networks can support the capacity needs of the Common Core assessments, 73% said they are not very confident. Similarly, 67% of districts said they are not confident that their current networks can support the security needs of the Common Core assessments.
To address these issues and help districts prepare for the large scale, simultaneous student testing, a live webinar, Preparing Your District Technology for Common Core Assessments will be held on August 8th at 2:00 PM ET. Participating in the webinar are the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) and Whiteriver school district.
Here are more resources for school districts preparing for the Common Core assessments. We’ve created a downloadable infographic showing the five areas that require attention as districts prepare for the online assessments: devices, software, network, facilities, and staff/personnel. We also offer free Enterasys help in understanding district readiness for PARCC Common Core assessments and readiness for Smarter Balanced Common Core assesssments. All of these resources are available at our CCSS Resource Center.
